Seniors Step up to Give Lady Lions a Win in Final Home Game

Catherine Morin-Dandois (19), Alexandra Gareau (17), Catherine Crete-Belzile (12) and Caroline Turcotte (10) combined for 58 of the Lady Lions’ 76 points on Sunday, to lead their team to a 76-70 win over Sherbrooke.

alt_text_hereIt is an inspired team that stepped on the court after the pre-game ceremony honoring our four seniors. The Lady Lions jumped to a quick 18-5 lead, lead by Catherine Morin, who scored ten of the teams first 13 points. St. Lawrence held a 13-point lead halfway through the first quarter, but Sherbrooke fought back to close the lead to seven points at the end of the quarter. Sherbrooke kept the momentum in the second quarter and continued chipping away at the Lions’ lead, to finally get their first lead in the final minute of the half. However, Veronique Johnson hit a clutch three-point shot in the final seconds of the half to give the Lady Lions a 2-point lead at the break.

St. Lawrence started cold in the second half, scoring only 4 points in the first half of the third quarter. Sherbrooke took advantage of the situation, taking a 5-point lead. The Lady Lions came back strong, going on a 12-2 run in the last 4 minutes of the quarter to take the lead for good. Sherbrooke was able cut the lead to 1 point early in the fourth quarter, but strong play inside from Catherine Crete-Belzile, Alexandra Gareau and Caroline Turcotte, both in scoring and rebounding, helped St. Lawrence keep control of the game; final score Sherbrooke 70- Lady Lions 76.

On a final note, on behalf of the college, I would like to congratulate and say thank you to our four seniors and wish them good luck in their future plans. Their dedication and passion for the game of basketball has marked our “AAA” program. Their contribution on and off the court will forever be remembered.
